Japc received $3.22 billion to restart nuclear power plants near Tokyo, with 80% of the funding coming from TEPCO and Northeast power.

Japan's Atomic Energy Corporation (japc) is likely to receive about $3.22 billion (about 35 billion yen) from five major power companies to restart the Donghai 2 nuclear power plant in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, the Japan news agency reported.

Most or 80% of the funds will come from TEPCO and Northeast power, and the remaining three, namely central power, Beilu power and Kansai power, will bear the rest.

Japan Atomic Power intends to use the money to ensure the safety of aging reactors, but the recovery plan is still unclear due to the slow progress of local governments in approval.

In Japan, nuclear reactors are generally allowed to operate for 40 years, but under certain conditions they can be approved for another 20 years. From CNNPN
