EU will lift some import restrictions on agricultural products after Japan's nuclear accident

2019-11-11

Japan's Ministry of agriculture, forestry and Fisheries announced Thursday that the European Union (EU) will lift some of the restrictions on agricultural imports imposed by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. Before that, due to the Fukushima nuclear accident, the import of agricultural, forestry and aquatic products in Iwate, zuomu and Chiba counties of the European Union would be simplified from November 14.

Previously, when the EU imported agricultural products from these areas, it needed to issue a radioactive material test report. After the lifting of import restrictions, agricultural products can enter the EU market directly without radiation detection.

In addition, the European Union has also revoked the restrictions on the import of aquatic products in Miyagi, Ibaraki and qunma counties of Japan. The restrictions on the export of agricultural products such as mushrooms from Ibaraki, Niigata and Nagano counties to the European Union will also be cancelled. In the future, there is no need to issue a radiation detection report.

The EU gradually lifted the import restrictions on Japan's crops in stages. The measures announced this time are an important part of the EU's complete lifting of the import restrictions on Japan's agricultural products caused by the Fukushima nuclear accident.

At present, the EU still retains import restrictions on persimmons, mushrooms and other crops produced in Fukushima Prefecture. The restrictions on the import of mushrooms and other crops produced in Miyagi, Ibaraki and qunma counties, which have lifted the restrictions on the import of aquatic products, will remain. (From CNNPN)
