India will build 21 new nuclear power plants by 2031

On October 18, 2019, Indian atomic energy minister KAMLESH Vyas said that India plans to realize the mass construction of nuclear power projects in the future to reduce the construction cost and duration. He revealed that in addition to the current projects under construction, India also plans to build 17 nuclear power units.

Vyas stressed that in recent decades, India has built a total of 22 nuclear power generating units, but nuclear power accounts for only about 3% of the country's total power generation, mainly because the initially built small capacity domestically designed reactor aims to help the country gain nuclear technology experience.

At present, there are 7 nuclear power units under construction in India, including 4 pressurized heavy water reactor units independently developed by India, i.e. 3 and 4 units of kakrapar nuclear power plant and 7 and 8 units of Rajasthan nuclear power plant, 2 Russian made VVER PWR units, i.e. 3 and 4 units of Kudankulam nuclear power plant, and 1 fast breeder reactor independently developed by India Unit, i.e. KALPAKKAM nuclear power plant.

In January 2019, the Ministry of atomic energy of India announced that 21 new nuclear power units with a total installed capacity of 15700 MWe will be built by 2031, of which 10 units will adopt the design of domestic pressurized heavy water reactor. (From CNNPN)
